Alexander sat down at the card table setup on the ship bound for the new world. The cards were given to him to deal. The game was avalon poker, a simple variation on the common game. The rules were the same except the first card dealt to each player was dealt face up, the jokers (or fey) were wild, the first card was discarded to appease the fey and that there were always five players. One player for each compass point and the station or dealer.
As Alexander shuffled the cards his mind drifted momentarily to the tarot card reading he had gotten from a waif on the docks. More a charity for the half starved child than any real desire desire to see his future. It was a simple six card cross.
Blinking his eyes his mind returned to the present and the more important matter at hand, silver. Shuffling the deck he passed the deck to be cut by one of the players. The deck was cut an the top card discarded. The five of masks, the same first card from the tarot reading.
“Once strangers travel in five” Alexander could hear the child’s voice
Alexander hands momentarily stop, then continue dealing the cards. He deals the eight of tomes to the academic with the ink stained fingers and Alexander’s smile falters slightly.
“You shall choose between the quill or the blade” the child’s voice continues
Alexander deals the next card to a noble with a killer’s eyes. Before even looking he knows it is the nine of crows.
“The other place beckons with the voice of oblivion”
The next card goes to a man with the look of a wizard. He guards the book at his side more protectively then even the academic guards his books. The queen of masks is dealt.
“and the witches will wait for you at the cross roads.”
The final man appears to be one of honor by his bearing and talk. A military man. The ten of rams.
“The deaf man must hear the owl’s warning, for new enemies are made from old allies”
The final card dealt to myself, the king of tomes
“and you will stumble upon the line between life and death.”
Alexander takes a second look around the table. If the cards are to be believed, these people are meant to become my companions, but first lets see if I can part them with their coin and continues dealing the rest of the cards.
